The American Red Cross

Clara Barton founded The American Red Cross in 1881.  Since then, it has blossomed into the nation’s premier emergency response organization.  More than 500,000 volunteers and 35,000 employees help the Red Cross further their mission through their 700 locally supported chapters.  An impressive 91 cents of each dollar spent by the Red Cross is invested in humanitarian services and programs.

Their mission statement is:

The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
